Criticism is directed at the limited scope of the current draft bill, as it fails to address fundamental issues such as distortions in the composition of the Electoral College and the potential threat of a dark horse candidate. Administrative reforms are also indirectly criticized for having distorted the original proportionality of the Electoral College.

The primary opponent is the ruling coalition, particularly the Reform Party, which is being criticized for implementing tax hikes. The criticism is directed both at the substance of the policy (the car tax, income tax, and excise duties) and at political integrity, thereby questioning the legitimacy of the government (a lack of mandate).
